Two of our favs published books this year: writer, director, producer and web TV phenom, Issa Rae (Awkward Black Girl) and writer, director, Justin Simien (Dear White People).
Better still, Issa Rae is currently on a cross-country book tour, is stopping in the Bay Area for the weekend and will be sharing the stage with Justin Simien. If you’re a fan of either of these two, this is an event you don’t want to miss.
And if you’re in the Bay Area this weekend, then you’re in luck. Our friends over at Arts & Ideas at the JCCSF who are hosting the event asked us to give away 10 pairs of tickets and all you have to do to enter is hit us up (Like/RT any related post) on one of these social mediums: Twitter | Facebook.
From JCCSF:
Issa Rae is the phenom behind the hit web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, which has garnered 25 million YouTube views (and counting), and author of a new book of the same name. She made Glamour magazine’s “35 Under 35” and Forbes’s “30 Under 30” lists, won the Shorty Award for Best Web Show, and developed shows with Shonda Rhimes and Larry Wilmore. Justin Simien wrote and directed the acclaimed feature film Dear White People and won the Special Jury Award for “Breakthrough Talent” at Sundance 2014. Both challenge traditional Hollywood stories and roles and share their razor-sharp observations from the frontlines.
“I loved this book. Issa Rae is brilliant, funny and loveably awkward.”
– Mindy Kaling, author of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?and star and creator of The Mindy Project.
“Seeming to draw equal measures of inspiration from Whit Stillman and Spike Lee, but with his own tart, elegant sensibility very much in control, Mr. Simien evokes familiar campus stereotypes only to smash them and rearrange the pieces.”
– New York Times
